Otherwise we'd be legally free to kill crazy people in the streets because they believe we're dragons out to kill them.
Their frame of mind -- his frame of mind -- has no bearing on the law. The law is above perspective. The law is not a shirt you can take off at whim. Despite his protestations, he still bears the weight and the freedoms inherent in the law, whether he wants them or not.
And though the officers were perfectly right in restricting his access, use of potentially lethal force on a non-resisting individual is a gross overreach of power and I reiterate my question: what is wrong with America that this keeps on happening?
