If you cut into the grass, and under the majority of roots, you can just roll it up like a carpet.
Sod farms do it all the time. Use it to patch bare spots in your lawn or something.

damn its hardly a garden anymore. its a lawn. either get a tiller and till the grasses, or use a hoe...with that level of damage you will feel like a field slave by the time you're done, might take a couple of days to avoid heat stroke
